What's included
Test it. Replace it if it needs it.
- 01Battery check and test. A battery check can include a test of the battery's condition, so you know where it stands today instead of guessing from how it sounds.
- 02Battery replacement. When the check says it is done, we fit the replacement and make sure the car starts.
What to expect
You get the result explained before anything is replaced. If the battery checks out, the check can extend to the charging system and anything that may be draining it, because a battery that keeps dying is not always the battery.
Signs you need this
What the car is telling you.
- Slow cranking, or a click when you turn the key.
- Headlights dim at idle and brighten when you rev.
- Battery or charging-system warning light.
- You have needed a jump start more than once.
- White or green crust on the terminals.
- The battery is more than three to five years old. AAA Northeast advises testing any battery five years or older before frigid weather arrives.
- A battery that keeps dying may not be the battery. It can be the alternator or a drain, which is where our diagnostics come in.
Why winter matters
At 0°F a battery gives about half of what it gives in summer.
And the engine needs about 30% more energy to turn over in the cold. A battery that was fine in October is the one that fails in January.

Questions people ask
About batteries.
How long does a car battery last, and how do I know mine is going?
Most last about three to five years. Slow cranking, dim lights at idle, a battery warning light or needing a jump start are the usual signs. A quick test tells you for sure, and it is worth doing before winter.
My car needed a jump again. Is it the battery?
Maybe. A battery that keeps dying can also mean the alternator is not charging it, or something is drawing power with the car off. We test the battery first, then the charging system, so you replace the right thing.
