Engine repair and overhaul in Dorchester

Whether it is a minor repair or a full rebuild, we restore engines to peak performance. Leaks, misfires and power loss, handled with care and with the right diagnosis first. Not every engine problem needs an overhaul; the diagnostic tells us which it is.

What's included

From a small fix to a full rebuild.

  1. 01Minor engine repairs. The small jobs that keep an engine healthy: a leak, a sensor, a part that failed.
  2. 02Full engine rebuilds and overhauls. When the engine is worn through, we rebuild it rather than patching symptoms.
  3. 03Leak repair. Oil and coolant leaks found at the source and fixed there.
  4. 04Misfire diagnosis and repair. Rough idle, shaking, a flashing check engine light: we find which cylinder and why.
  5. 05Power-loss diagnosis and repair. Hesitation, stumbling under load, a car that will not pull up a hill like it used to.

What to expect

We start with a diagnostic so the repair matches the real cause, and you get a written estimate to approve before work starts. If the job needs to go past the estimate, we get your OK first.

Signs you need this

What the car is telling you.

  • Rough or uneven idle you can feel through the seat or the steering wheel.
  • Hesitation when you accelerate, and losing power under load, like climbing a hill.
  • Oil spots where you park, or the oil level dropping between changes.
  • Coolant smell, the temperature gauge creeping up, or steam from under the hood.
  • Blue or black smoke from the exhaust.
  • Knocking, ticking or a flashing check engine light. A flashing light is urgent: pull over when it is safe. Urgent

Symptom to cause

The symptom is where we start. The cause is what we fix.

The same symptom can come from very different places. This is why the diagnostic comes first.

What we look atExamples

Misfire, shaking at idle
Ignition, fuel delivery, compression
Oil on the driveway
Gaskets, seals, oil pan, filter housing
Loses power uphill
Fuel, air, exhaust restriction, timing
Running hot
Cooling system, head gasket, thermostat

General examples of where common engine symptoms come from, not a diagnosis of your car.

Questions people ask

About engine work.

What causes an engine misfire?

Most often ignition (plugs, coils), fuel delivery (an injector, fuel pressure) or compression (a mechanical problem inside the engine). A scan narrows it to a cylinder; the diagnostic tells us which of the three it is.

Is it worth rebuilding an engine?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. It depends on what is actually worn, the car's age and condition, and what you want from it. We tell you what we find and what it would take, in writing, and you decide.

My check engine light is flashing. What do I do?

Pull over when it is safe and call us. A flashing light means a misfire is happening right now, and driving on it can damage the catalytic converter.
